Home Saunas - What Type Is Right for You? By Pertti Olavi Jalasjaa People who wish to enhance their home with an indoor or outdoor sauna have many great options. Modular sauna kits, also known as pre-built or prefab sauna kits, are recommended for folks who want a home sauna that is easy to repeatedly assemble, dismantle, move and re-assemble. Only a few tools (like a hammer and square), basic carpentry skills, and an extra pair of hands should be required to assemble a modular sauna correctly. Even the time a prefab sauna assembly typically takes – about one hour – is a small investment, so you and your friend should be able to use your sauna on the same day that you build it. Pre-cut sauna kits are geared more for homeowners who are confident enough in their abilities to attempt do-it-yourself home renovation projects. Pre-cut sauna kits should contain all the materials required for a permanent sauna installation. Properly building a sauna from a pre-cut kit, however, demands more tools, time and talent than assembling a modular sauna does. To many sauna fans, no sauna, pre-cut, prefab or otherwise is an authentic traditional Finnish sauna if it’s missing any one of several essential elements: a sauna stove or sauna heater; sauna rocks (also called sauna stones); high temperatures, and water to help control the humidity level. These four elements work together to create the perfect sauna bath ambience for the Finnish sauna lover. Unlike a traditional Finnish sauna, which depends on steam to heat the air, a far infrared sauna or soft heat sauna utilizes radiant energy, similar to solar heat, to heat a sauna bather directly. Far infrared saunas have garnered a large and loyal following in recent years, in part because many sauna bathers find the temperatures inside infrared saunas easier to tolerate than those in conventional Finnish saunas. While Finnish saunas undeniably offer great therapeutic value in their own right, the considerable list of health benefits associated with regular far infrared sauna use also continues to contribute to the booming popularity of soft heat saunas. If you are thinking about buying a home sauna, it is critical that you familiarize yourself with the various types of saunas available. The more knowledge about saunas that you have before you make your selection, the more happiness your new home sauna will likely bring you. |
