Many Finnish and Swedish immigrants moved to Canada from the USA early in the 19th century. Upon their arrival in Canada, the new settlers wasted no time in putting their roots down, and their saunas up. As was the case when Finns and Swedes descended upon America, many of the immigrants to Canada built their saunas before they finished building their new homes. During the 1900's, many immigrants came directly from Norway, Sweden and Finland to contribute greatly to our sauna culture in Canada.

In Canada, the Finnish settlers took jobs as labourers, farmers, loggers and miners. They helped construct the Welland Canal in Ontario and played a significant role in the establishment of the railroad industry across Canada.

Initially, the Finns sought out land that reminded them of their native Finland. Preferring rural areas to large urban centers, many settlers chose areas of Canada that had large forests nearby, perhaps to be guaranteed the choice wood necessary for building their saunas.

Today, the chief areas of Finnish settlement in Canada are: Victoria-Vancouver in British Columbia, Edmonton-Calgary in Alberta, and Toronto-Hamilton in Ontario. In Ontario, the Thunder Bay area as well as the Sudbury area now have the highest concentration of Finnish descendants found anywhere in Canada. Montreal in Quebec also has high numbers of Finnish descendants. Among the provinces, Ontario contains more than half of the Finns in Canada.
